A long weekend in a villa overlooking San Gimignano is the kind of escape that lingers in the imagination long after you return home. From the moment we left Pisa airport and began the gentle drive south, Tuscany unfolded like a living painting. Vineyards stretched endlessly across rolling hills, punctuated by silvery olive groves and rows of cypress trees standing to attention under vast blue skies. Every bend in the road revealed another picture-postcard view, the landscape saturated with colour, texture and history.
Rising from this dreamlike setting is San Gimignano itself, instantly recognisable by its medieval skyline. Known as the “Town of Fine Towers,” San Gimignano dates back to the 3rd century BC, but it flourished during the Middle Ages when wealthy families built soaring stone towers to demonstrate their power and prosperity. Once home to more than 70 towers, 14 still stand today, earning the town UNESCO World Heritage status. Walking through its narrow cobbled streets feels like stepping back in time, with honey-coloured stone buildings, Romanesque churches and small piazzas humming gently with life.
Our base for the weekend was an exclusive villa nestled among vineyards just outside the town walls, offering complete privacy and uninterrupted views across the Tuscan countryside. The villa itself was beautifully understated – traditional terracotta floors, exposed wooden beams and cool stone walls that kept the interiors blissfully comfortable. Outside, lavender bushes, rosemary and wild herbs framed the property, filling the warm air with unmistakably Mediterranean aromas. In the early mornings, birdsong echoed across the hills, while evenings brought the soft chorus of cicadas as the sun dipped low.
The surrounding flora and fauna felt effortlessly abundant. Sunflowers nodded lazily in nearby fields, grapevines heavy with fruit traced neat lines across the land, and butterflies flitted through the gardens. It was the kind of place that encouraged slowing down, long breakfasts on the terrace, afternoons by the pool with a book and a glass of something chilled, and evenings spent watching the light change over the valley.
Food and drink were, unsurprisingly, a standout. San Gimignano is famous for its crisp Vernaccia di San Gimignano white wine, which paired perfectly with simple, exceptional local dishes. Rustic trattorias served handmade pici pasta, wild boar ragù, fresh pecorino and olive oil pressed just miles away. Even gelato reached new heights here, with flavours that tasted intensely pure.
What surprised us most was how reasonable everything was, generous meals, excellent wine and unforgettable settings at prices that felt refreshingly down to earth.
A long weekend in San Gimignano is more than a getaway, it’s an immersion into the soul of Tuscany, rich in history, flavour and beauty, and utterly, effortlessly enchanting.
